The Journeyman Welder is a skilled expert in fabricating, fitting, and repairing drilling rig components, while also providing guidance and mentorship to apprentice welders. This role serves as a key liaison to the Lead Hand, helping ensure all projects are completed efficiently and to the highest quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a variety of manual and semi-automatic welding and metal shaping equipment—including GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SMAW, MCAW processes, as well as flame-cutting tools, brazing and soldering equipment, and shaping machines—while following all safety protocols and industry best practices.
  • Read and interpret blueprints and welding process specifications to accurately fabricate, fit, and repair drilling rig components and equipment, ensuring high standards of quality, structural integrity, and efficiency throughout each project.
  • Contribute to project planning and execution by assisting with accurate estimations, performing proper lifting, rigging, and hoisting techniques, and supporting general shop housekeeping and upkeep to maintain a safe and organized work environment.
  • Provide mentorship to welding apprentices, offering guidance and skill development support as needed to help ensure team growth, knowledge sharing, and adherence to company quality and safety expectations.

Requirements

  • Must hold Registered Red Seal Journeyman Welder Certification
  • 2+ years proven experience with FCAW, SMAW, GMAW welding processes, all-position welds, and fitting, with structural fabrication skills considered a strong asset.
  • Holding a B pressure ticket and experience in oilfield, automotive, or aviation manufacturing within a service/jobber shop environment are valued assets.

Skills Desired

Ability to read and interpret structural blueprints, welding symbols, and familiarity with industry codes such as API, CWB, ASME, and CSA is advantageous.
