Welder Fitter
Responsibilities
- Fire up welding machines—stick, MIG, TIG—as needed.
- Cut metal using torches or plasma tools.
- Bend and shape steel on brakes and shears.
- Work off of drawings, specs, and shop orders.
- Assemble parts and check weld joints.
- Keep your workspace clean and tools organized.
- Follow safety rules—PPE, weld fumes, gloves.
- Flag broken tools or supply shortages right away.
- Help set up fixtures or jigs when required.
- Walk through finished pieces to check accuracy.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma accepted.
- Welding ticket or technical training is a bonus.
Experience
At least 3 years doing real welding and fitting work, ideally in structural or metal fabrication settings.
Skills
- Can run stick, TIG, MIG and flame-cut setups.
- Reads blueprints and wiring diagrams clearly.
- Cuts and shapes steel with accuracy.
- Works with other trades and crew members easily.
- Can lift, bend, and stay steady over job hours.
Knowledge
- How metal behaves when heat hits it.
- Common weld standards and joint prep.
- Basics of heat-affected zones and clean-up.
- How to protect yourself from sparks and heat.
- Helps troubleshoot weld defects.
