Here’s something not everyone can say they’ve done — working as an Excavator Operator inManukau, Auckland. This role is being offered through Tradestaff Global and runs from October 2025 to March 2026, based at McMurdo Station. You’ll be part of a team handling one of the most remote construction sites on the planet.This is a full-time, contract-based position. Pay sits at $73.64 NZD per hour, covering 54 hours weekly, and the contract is paid fortnightly. Flights from any major airport in New Zealand are covered. Food and shared accommodation are also included, plus travel insurance. The job involves operating 30 to 50-tonne excavators in extreme conditions, and sometimes hopping off the machine to lend a hand on the ground. You’ll be away for a few months, working long hours, six days a week. This role isn’t fly-in-fly-out. It’s a serious commitment, but also an experience very few people will ever have. Responsibilities
- Operating large excavators (30–50 tonnes) on site.
- Assisting with general labor when needed — not just sitting in the cab.
- Following safety instructions to the letter.
- Helping maintain equipment to avoid breakdowns.
- Adapting to a routine that includes long hours and harsh conditions.
- Supporting the construction team in any way needed.
Requirements and Qualifications
Education
Formal education is not necessary, but applicants must hold WTR and Class 2 licenses.
Experience
At least 3 years of hands-on experience operating heavy excavators is required. Work history in road building, civil sites, or commercial construction is ideal. If you’ve used other machines like dozers or loaders, that’s a bonus.
